Tungsten copper alloys are used in applications where a combination of high heat resistance, high electrical or thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion is necessary. Some applications are in resistance soldering, as electrical contacts, and as electronic packaging sheets. Due to the arc erosion resistance of alloy contact materials, tungsten copper alloys are also used in electrical discharge machining and electrochemical machining electrodes.
CuW75 alloy, containing 75% tungsten, is widely used in chip carriers, substrate power semiconductor devices, flanges and frames. The combination of high thermal conductivity and low expansion of copper-tungsten allows thermal expansion to match that of silicon, gallium arsenide, and some ceramics.
